Dr Ali Cook graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry in 1992, followed by completing a PhD in 1997 on ‘Blood Cell Filterability in Health and Vascular Disease’, both at the University of Wales College Cardiff. Subsequently Ali worked as a Research Co-ordinator at Velindre NHS Trust, Cardiff for three years. This role included completing a systematic review on the effectiveness of palliative care teams; acting as a local lead for phase II clinical trials funded by Janssen Research Foundation and Napp Pharmaceuticals; successfully applying for research grants and teaching on the Diploma/BSc in Palliative Nursing and MSc in Palliative Medicine courses.

In 2001 Ali joined the NIHR Horizon Scanning Research & Intelligence Centre (HSRIC) at the Institute of Applied Health Research, University of Birmingham. Ali was Associate Director of the 35 strong team and Head of the sub-team focussed on horizon scanning for medical devices, diagnostics and procedures. During this time Ali gained extensive experience of line management and team leadership obtaining Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 2 Award in Team Leading in 2009 & Level 3 Certificate in Leadership and Management in 2013 and gaining her PRINCE2 qualification in 2016. Ali led on the liaison and networking with clinical experts, commercial developers, research groups and the multifaceted innovation landscape as well as developing and delivering on the Centre’s newly formed patient and public involvement & engagement programme (PPIE). In addition Ali was a PhD supervisor and actively involved in teaching and personal mentoring to medical students (MBChB), organising and delivering training to national and international bodies and numerous oral conference presentations, both at national and international level.

In 2017 Ali joined the NIHR SRMRC as the team’s Project Research Officer. Her role mainly involves supporting grants at the application and delivery stages and assisting the Programme Manager in project management activities.
