Biography

Dr Cox is Deputy Director – Research Finance & Programmes in the R&D Directorate at the Department of Health. He is responsible for policies, systems and programmes for commissioning research. This includes research which informs DH policy, as well as research funded through the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) focused on the evidence needs of health professionals, patients and the public. Dr Cox also has responsibility for NIHR’s research training and career development programmes.

Dr Cox joined the Department of Health in 2008 after working in a variety of research management roles at the Medical Research Council, including responsibilities in planning and evaluation.

During this time he supported Research Council CEOs in preparation of the Research Councils UK ‘Synthesis of Strategies’. Before working at the MRC, Dr Cox spent a decade as a neuroscientist.
