Elaine Spruce qualified as a registered nurse in 2008 and has since worked in a variety of specialities. She has spent the majority of her career working in critical care as a staff nurse which she thoroughly enjoyed, and later went on to complete her BSc in Critical Care Nursing in 2015. Elaine has always found nursing research interesting, and gained her first post in research in September 2016 where she joined the SRMRC team as a band 5 research nurse. Developing within her role, Elaine successfully gained a promotion in February 2018 where she became a band 6 research sister. Elaine is passionate about research and feels privileged to be helping improve the outcomes for patients who are critically unwell or have sustained traumatic injury. She believes that every patient within the NHS should have the opportunity to take part in research.

In 2015 I completed my degree in Adult Nursing at Birmingham City University. During my studies, I had worked as both a volunteer and a Healthcare Assistant at QEHB. My first registered nurse post was in Critical Care Area C (Neurology/Neurosurgery) at QEHB. After 8 months I left to work in the community with the district nursing service and then with patients with complex healthcare needs.

After two years of working in the community, I was involved in an accident and came to QEHB as a trauma patient. The care I received at QEHB was amazing and inspired me to come back to the place that had looked after me so well.

Now as a research nurse, I want to learn as much as possible about the research process. I love being involved in improving the care, treatments and quality of life of people I’ll never even meet, both now and in the future through research. My goal is to go back to university alongside my job to further my education and my career in research.

I have been a qualified Nurse for 2 years and have previously worked for 1 year in Vascular/Thoracic surgery at BHH Ward 4. The Thoracic department then migrated to QEHB Ward 727 where I came along with them and worked for another year on a multi-speciality ward consisting of Colorectal/Upper GI/Cardiac and Thoracic surgery where a HDU was implemented for level 2 patients who have had Thoracic surgery. I have now started a new job in Trauma Research that I am excited to learn more about and become a valuable member of the NIHR SRMRC team.
